Oh dear, after reading Dirda's review I just cannot work up the enthusiasm to look for/buy the book. I'm deeply into 'real life' stuff right now and don't want to break that 'spell' just yet. And would this book be fun, having read Tolkien? Am in the middle of 'Tr. of
Cancer' and freaking out and have more Orwell, Jack London, Steinbeck, more stuff on Hitler waiting in the wings. Sorry!

Amro -- no, I would NOT highly recommend reading "Jonathan Strange ..." It's a book for committed fantasy/SF lovers, I'd say, and for them it has much to offer. Perhaps also those who are interested in English history and willing to read a decidedly alternative account.

Keith -- re anal leakage, my sympathies.

Amro! U must be online even as I post this message ... your comment appeared a moment after I blogged-on, and wasn't there at first sight. Well hola, chin-chin and all that! It's rather early in my day (or late in my night, if you see what I mean) and I must flee in order to get in a bit of sleep. *m'yawn* Thanx for visiteshwarums!
